Hi Jack!!!

You should run, teach us rookies a few things. I will be leaving Monterrey in the morning. I am way north at the Airport about 30 minutes from downtown and plans for the evening include cerveza and packing. Would hate to intrude on anyone but thanks.

Hey, what is at TWS and when is the next one? We need to do one of those down there. Marc S tells me that it is good for our cars. Big staight that lets our legs stretch. I need more than 140 or 150 at MSR. Can we run faster than that?

140 - 150 is flying on MSR! I think the most I saw was 110 - 115 tops, probably 120+ the session my instructor drove the car as he went deeper in before braking. My instructor at MSR told me that I would easily hit 150 at TWS so heck you might make it to 180 with that yellow monster!

YOU said I could tear up the track. It was on both the "start/finish" stretch and the back stretch where both tracks meet. I never got to 150. I hit 145 2 times, and could have maybe done better as I got the hang of accelerating out of the corner better. I did it on the last track run, and the instructor said I was flying faster around that track by several seconds compared to other sessions. Just getting the "hang" of it over time.

4th. I'm not sure if it is early or mid gear. Little bit too much going on with the instructor yelling commands while I watched him pinch the middle of the sport bucket alcanterra seat.

I didn't start hitting 4th til later in the DE as I started some shift work. I began running 2nd in 2 places and 4th in 2 places.

You have some really nice wheels, and tires that aren't made for the track. I would hate to see you ruin em. The performance is sooooo much better. I have the Cups and I can promise you they made me look good. Car helps too, but the car is nothing without the rubber (that is original).

I have significantly less power than you and I'm pushing 130 out of Big Bend just before I have to hit the brakes hard for rattle snake... Get an alignment done and throw all the negative camber into the front that your car will allow (this won't hurt daily driving and may actually help tire wear) :)

It's a driver issue. It was my first time with that car on a track. I'm just happy my tires never touched grass.

That "grass" is my favorite part about MSR. I can drive my car at 9/10 or 10/10 and if I mess up, the only thing I have to worry about is getting a little bit of dirt in the cabin. Oh and the fact that it's close enough to drive to "track ready" (r-comps on, etc) is also nice :)

To be honest, I only looked at the speedometer for a quick second on one lap and that was when it was safe, never looked just before braking. Also, I am driving on street pilots...I will try to look this time.

Power is one thing, but it really comes down to handling and how much speed you can carry through Big Bend. The less speed you have to scrub thorugh the turn means the faster your track out which leads to a much faster terminal before you have to brake for Rattlesnake. Speaking of Rattlesnake, that furst curve to the right off the straight can actually be taken as several little turns (turn, straighen & brake, turn, straighten & brake, turn, etc) so you can, technically, carry more speed and not have to brake so hard initially (which means you have more distance to hit/carry your terminal velocity for the straight). That being said, however, the easiest line (and the one I usually take) is to plant your front-right wheel on the seam in the middle of the asphalt and follow it all the way around the first curve.

Michael, I like you a lot; please continue to only take a very quick look at the speedo and keep your eyeballs on the track!! ;-) Wonder what lap times are being achieved. Top speed is one thing but.......Reminds me of one drive where my best friend was fastest down the straightaway (228) but was mid-pack in qualifying. Hmmm, a little deficient in the corners??

I have had serveral 911 instructors to date and they indicate my main issue is smoothness which relates directly to braking and throttle response. The big turns are not a problem for the TT and carrying speed is not the issue, it's the more technical turns like rattlesnake. I love the big turns and you cannot be timid on the gas in those turns in a 911. The key is 40% turn in and 60% turn out all while hitting the apex. With street tires the TT's lateral forces take the car all the way out to the edge, and your foot better be planted, but here again with smooth transistion to full speed not stomping on the gas. The street tires show all mistakes and typically they only sing in rattlesnake.

John Gladwil at Boardwalk setup the suspension and is set based on my driving style and the weight consideration with AWD. Next step is coilovers and maybe the R tires...not until I have had a few more DE's...in the end, it is always about the driver. :)

Just got my new rubber put on and I'm definitely going to be dialing things back a bit this weekend... I moved from Nitto NT01 (R-comp) to Dunlop Direzza StarSpecs (Extreme Summer, but near R-comp) and, as it would turn out, the Nittos (which came on the 2nd hand track wheels I'd been running) run extremely wide, whereas the Direzzas run "normal"...So I've lost a lot of lateral rubber in the rear...I'd say two inches at least :( Suffice to say, any understeer issues I was having should now be gone... :|

I am letting John Gladwil make the adjustments based on his experience, certanly not mine. John is the lead mech and racer at Boardwalk.

Should have gone with NT05sI'd be willing to bet the NT05s would have also been narrower as they're a street tire. R-comps run wide (from my research, Nittos are the widest, then Hoosiers). Street tires typically run "true to size", so the NT05 and my Direzza would most likely have been the same width. As far as which is actually better for dry grip...Right now it's still a bit of a toss up. The Direzzas have been the King of the road since middle of last year and the few reviews out there so far on the NT05s (and brand new BridgeStone RE-11s) have them trading places back and forth. What decided on the Dunlops for me is that I run them on my daily-driving wheels as well which just so happened to be the same size as my track rubber so I now have an emergency set of matched wheels.

Anyway, as far as sizing goes, if I had been smart enough to figure out the width differences ahead of time, I would have gone with a 295 or 305 tire in rear to make up the difference.

Nice! I should have had mine cleared when I got it. Oh well. What the hard core Lotus guys do is get the adhesive shelf paper (comes in rolls, twelve-inches-wide) and wrap their cars in that stuff and then cut out the holes. Works well, and you can switch the design up!...Stripes one day, flowers the next! :)

Lately I haven't been taping at all, although I did find Stucco tape at HDepot that almost matches my red color.... So I'd put down the blue tape, then put the red over it

Direzza have had great reviews since inception. The NT05s seemed to me to be newer technology and have received great reviews for track use. So far I'm very impressed on the street. We'll see what the track tells me.

Hey do any of your P-Car guys know what Porsche puts in for brake fluid stock? I'd like to top off my girlfriend's fluid, but all I have on hand (in order of heat resistance) is Pentosin, ATE Super Blue, and ATE Gold. Are any of these kosher to mix in with whatever Porsche uses?

Actually, this page (http://www.globalautoparts.biz/pentosin_hydraulic_fluids.html) would seem to indicate that Porsches come with Pentosin 11S from the factory...and that 11S can be mixed with the higher grade 202... Can any of you guys confirm this?

What I have isn't 202, it's labled as "Racing Brake Fluid" and this (http://www.bradrobertsag.com/product/1212687943/Special_PENTOSIN_RACING_BRAKE_FLUID.html)page says it comes from the factory in Porsches... hmmm

LOL I don't have Motul and mixing brake fluids isn't a good idea without prior knowledge of how they'll mix. You could end up with congealed jello in your brake lines.

What time is check-in tomorrow? Does anyone know?

I believe check-in is 7:30. Don't you have to bleed the brakes as well?

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

ALL PROGRAMS RUN RAIN OR SHINE.
Apex Driving Academy events run in ALL weather conditions!
Do not be put off by a forecast for rain - driving in the rain is an excellent learning experience, and will help improve your driving skills in all conditions.

Facility opens at 8 a.m. Please arrive no later than 8:15 a.m. to check-in at the Apex desk inside the Clubhouse. Upon arrival, you will need to sign two waivers - one for Apex and one for the facility. Bringing your own vehicle means you must have completed your Tech Sheet/Inspection. You will be turning it in at check-in time. Note that fire extinguisher is not necessary, even though the Tech Sheet says it is. Roll bars are not required, though they are suggested. We do not require our instructors to sit right seat in vehicles without roll bars.

Class begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. All classroom sessions are MANDATORY.

For tech sheet, see http://www.apexdrivingacademy.com/information.htm#tech1 (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102585781270&s=1577&e=001wx2d8OL14-5jjG0yS1tEIIeWqEAWZl3jzvVhz2c8-UhxSWIo5s0r4jquAYVddfUXQ3DWIae5FTPKZYLPzUz8c5HkU90 Q_OAF3u2avGsD9pZOwdM6gpyj8Fo2s7MypIK5d8mD6Zw10V92M cSwbKJx0a3GpHPulmk_)

No storage, secure areas or garages will be available. However, you may store a few items inside the classroom if you wish. Use a covered plastic bin or laundry basket for gear storage. Cars must be emptied ofall items (coins, papers, tools, clothing, fast food wrappers, etc.) before driving on the track.

Long pants and closed toe shoes must be worn at all times except in cases of extreme hot weather. Bring shorts and comfortable shoes to wear between sessions if you wish. Showers are available.

Helmets are required (Snell 2000 or better). A limited number are available for rent - $10 cash for the day. If you have your own helmet - bring it! We cannot guarantee there will be enough helmets available for rent.

Please bring plenty of water, sunscreen, sun hat, and snacks. Only drink vending is available at the track. There is a full service gas station nearby and restaurants just up the road in Cresson or Benbrook for your lunch break. It is often more convenient to bring your own lunch, however.
During the day there will be our Show 'N' Shine where cars may be entered in a "beauty" competition. Vote for your favorite!

Registered drivers will have four 20-minute track sessions.

Lunchtime parade laps are planned and there will be limited availability for passengers to take a ride in a RUF exotic car.

We will also have a Tech Session Talk with an expert on Brembo brakes.

Spectactors are welcome! This will be a great day to come by, look at cars, talk to people, and learn more about high performance driving.

PLEASE BE AWARE

If you are using your own vehicle, do not plan major mechanical work on your vehicle prior to the track event.

Remember, our cancellation policy applies,

NO EXCEPTIONS:

Helpful Info/Comments from a recent Apex Driving Academy student:

I had the most incredible day today at Apex Driving Academy at Texas Motorsports Ranch. Most definitely broke the needle off the fun meter.

I can't thank you enough for one of the peak experiences of my life. I've had a whole lot of track days, but none more fun than this. Matt White was an incredible instructor- he showed me lines and gave me feedback throughout the day that allowed me to pass cars a whole lot more expensive than mine.

You are in for an incredible experience. If you haven't signed up for the [next date], I strongly urge you not to miss this - it's that much fun.

Superb facilities, first rate track instructors and the perfect balance of safety and fun - safety always first.

The track is challenging- you have your hands full for sure, but it's completely safe - just follow the rules and your instructor. You'll get a full day with all the speed you can handle.

Things to remember:
1. Bring your own lunch, water and snacks. There's a gas station half a mile away but do you want to eat diesel snacks all day?
I thought not.

2. Focus on hydration is important-- you'll sweat a lot more than you might think and rehydration really affects how you perform in the afternoon.

3. It's 76 miles from Plano to the track so leave early. Took me about an hour. You'll need to arrive no later than 8:15 AM.

4. You'll need to buy gas halfway through the day- no prob; there's a service station 1/2 mile away-- it's right on the edge of the property. Only put half a tank in it though as less fuel is less weight on the track. You can top it off on your way out of town when you leave for the day. Also- adjust your tire pressure [according to tire/car specifications]. Use a good gauge

5. They have helmets, but I prefer my own. Before you go, sit in your car with your helmet and get used to putting it on and taking it off. It's a bit trickier than you may think. You may also need to adjust your seat lower to clear the top of your helmet.

6. Get on the grid [5] minutes early for each session and be in your car with helmet set to go when they tell you to start your engine. This is especially true if you have glasses like I do and it takes a minute to get them on inside your helmet.

7. The instructors are incredible- listen to what they say. They will make an immense difference in your day.

8. You'll be pretty tired at the end of the day. About 1/3 of the intermediate guys dropped out before the end of the day. It's physically draining. Having someone else drive your car home is a very smart idea.

You're in the best of hands- I am ABSOLUTELY going back to Apex. I bet all of you who are signed up [for specific date] will return. If you've not done this- it'll be a real treat for you to see how your car operates at full speed on a race circuit. It's nothing at all like what you experience on the street. Not even closely related---- full blast throttle all day and no tickets!

If you have not signed up for [the next event] - I urge you to stimulate the economy and your adrenaline gland. You can't buy more fun than this for $210.

One last thing-- if you think you love your car now-- wait until you use it the way it was intended.

-Neil Reid

I believe check-in is 7:30.According to the email (I posted it above), check-in is "by 8:15".Don't you have to bleed the brakes as well?I just bled my brakes yesterday and hers were done a week ago with service.

I just confirmed that Porsches come from the factory with ATE Gold in them, which I happen to have on hand, so I'm golden...literally

Was a great day at the track. Actually turned out not too terribly hot (thank goodness there was a strong breeze and a few clouds). Incredible turn out for the Concours...Everything from F40s to Countaches to Enzos to Saleens to Dinos...And that doesn't even include all the fancy Porsches from RUF. There were also several (3?) different Lambos running in classes. I feel like I finally got to experience what a Cars&Coffee or DFWAC Saturday Morning meet is like :)

On a personal note, I got checked off to be in the Advanced group next time out (yippee)!

Thanks, Blake! Man I gotta tell ya, if I end up keeping my car, one of the first things I'm going to do is a diff swap and throw a 3.92 in there...followed shortly thereafter by coilovers.

I love the way my diff performs on the track, but the street performance is meh. Not to mention my 12.5 mpg economy average. Go with coilovers first though!

How much HP do you have? It is a huge combination or aeordynamics and HP and it isn't as easy as you think. I don't have a physics link, but the power and aerodynamic ratios become exponential each mph you travel above about 160. I have been told it takes 750 HP to hit 200. With good wind drag.

You know I always thought the straight between Big Bend and Rattlesnake would be my fastest but it wasn't today. I don't know what I was doing wrong, maybe I should be going down to third for Big Bend. Anyway it was the opposite straight (Ricochet to Luttle Bene) that I was going fastest on even though it was shorter. I was hitting 120 easily there... I would reset my 'average speed' computer on the car before each session and with warmup and cooloff laps, I was averaging around 65.

I was only hitting 117 through big bend into rattlesnake...coming out of that negative camber turn ricochete and heading to Little Bend is my highspeed run as well. Just a tap of the brakes and look downhill and go!!!!

I don't remember a single run where I could get any momentum up to start catching people. It's harder on the small track when there is traffic. Plus, there were a few guys that didn't want you to pass unless you tapped their bumper. I don't blame em. The event was great besides that. Major turnout.

Weird, I never saw you in our group. I had no problem with traffic, and the one time I was coming up on a train I hit the hot pits to be re-positioned. I think hot pitting is the key in a packed group. There was a black RX-7 that was annoying me (not a great driver...and he was solo?) and the orange Lambo was fun to play with. He'd kill me in the straights but I'd immediately be back on his bumper as soon as there was any kind of curve in the road... The cat in the grey Exige (he was in novice at the last Apex event) is a crazy driver, but he's pretty quick. What was up with that heavily modded mustang going half the speed of everyone else?

GTCole
06-07-2009, 01:39 PM
You have a good track car. I caught you and RX on last run. I knew you would be tough to catch. The lambo guy got tired of me on first run and let me pass reluctantly. I went out first on the 3 starting runs, went around the track, and then stopped while the last cars were filing out. I had 2 warm up laps every time. Starting in middle or end is better.

Yeah I figured being as you have a very fast car you probably couldn't help but catch up to traffic. I suppose, in a way, that's a good problem to have, but on the other hand it's probably pretty annoying. After my horrible first run, I was just happy to stay off the grass.

I see that the track speeds today, are now more in par with reality.
jragan 120, not 130 as previously reported.
Silent run 117 to 122 :thumbsup2:
CC08GT2, what happen to your 150, could you not verify it??? :hmmmm2:

Scott only one way to know, take to MexiGO. :bandit:

I hit 140 once and barely. Mostly about 130 to 135. I distinctly noticed the effect of 95 degrees on a turbo engine. I was mostly passing there which prevents speed attempts. Thank god I have ceramics. It is a major lockdown at speed before the snake. Ask Michael. He missed it once!!! And I'm still laughing over runnin thru a turn in a $150k car.

...And I'm still laughing over runnin thru a turn in a $150k car.If you're going to go off-track, MSR is a "safe" place to do it! Were you the "yellow Porsche" that had the near miss with the older M-Roadster and one other car coming into Big Bend?

Yes, I had an "off" yesterday going into rattlesnake as I carried too much speed. It was the last session and I was flying.

Did you scrape? I've gone off there before and felt like I ripped my driveshaft out. :(

Actually, it was a very smooth off...but I was concerned. Made a normal lap but hot pitted and had them look. Yes the spooler is scratched but it has been notched up a bit lately with the new shocks. Alignment is good and I just went out and hit the track hard again.

It was a "puckering" moment.

Take care of that car. I have it sold. And don't do any puckering in the back seat of my truck.

Technically, I forgot to get that guys number. Maybe I don't have it sold.
Only after you apologize for passing the GT2 and 599 on the track. Then I will reconsider. You stud.

Chuck,

I hear the Hooters girls are quite competitive. If you had shown them my avatar and told them you wanted to one up me they might have both licked your's at the same time!:D

I would have dearly loved to see that happen. Michael had to handle them. I had a customer of mine in the booth next door, and I wasn't interested in making myself look any worse than I normally do. Competitive is not the word I would use to describe these girls.

You guys crack me up!! Wonder if anyone offered the Hooter gals a ride. In a car, I mean. I chatted with them a bit and they seemed like very bright and thoughtful young women. LOL! Too bad the track isn't longer and they don't allow passing in turns. I do understand the logic of not wanting to bend any iron but looked pretty frustrating to me.
