I want a M5, period. But being a rational person I must ask is the M5 really a must have or a 550i would suffice.
With background as a horsepower addict, 507 ponies just sing to me everynight before bedtime :)
Not too sure about the 12/18 MPG either, we love taking long road trip. Of course if gas price is an issue then one shouldn't own a M5.
So M5 or 550i? Pros vs. Cons?
TIA

THe V10 lacks torque IMHO. It did not turn out to be a good daily driver for me. However the refined power and nature of the M is hard to beat. You'd be happy with either one but if your a 'driver' the M is the way to go.

I'm surprised to see that you appear to think that there is not much difference between the M and non-M BMWs. For MB, the difference between AMG and non-AMG is huge. I would never even consider buying a non-AMG MB.

I am sorry if I left that impression. The Ms are fantastic cars for 'drivers.' They are very stiff and the motor/steering response is impressive for a car the weights that much. However the V10 motor that they are currently using requires a lot of rpm to make power. Whereas the regular 550 has plenty of torque for daily driving and would not require the mental comment that the Ms need. (ie: you can just cruz to work and forget about everything else)
I am not trashing the M series at all but I felt like it required to much effort to drive daily in traffic. I look forward to the new V8 they are going to put in future models (especially if it has a turbo).

I've drove a 545i w/sport package for 2 months after I sold my truck and before I bought my current car. I can tell you that the 550i will not disappoint because it's a powerful car in itself but I don't think I could go from an M back to a non-M in the same model... actually I know I couldn't. If I couldn't go M, I'd be in a 135 coupe running up the boost!
Just do your research and try to get behind a number of cars for a test drive. If you are debating between the non M and M look at the CTS-V, G8 GT, M3 sedan, E63/55/550 because you could find a nice "in between" that will fit your needs.

I am the "driver" however I now want luxury along with speed. The M will be a weekend car, but on long trips my parents will be riding in the back seats...not sure if they can handle the sport suspension.
new V8 with a turbo? in which model? when?

The V8 twin turbo is the rumored powermill for the next gen M5/M6. It is over a year away.

I had the 2008 550i and traded it in for the 2006 m5. the m5 is a beast. 550i is nice to drive around town, but you will regret not getting the m5.

I owned a 2007 M5 for a couple of years and hands down it is the best all around car I have ever owned. Luxury car pricing is in the tank and you can get a pre-owned M5 for not much more than a 550, which is the way I would go if I were shopping for an M5. Once you own a ///M it's really hard to settle for a regular BMW. You may also consider a 2005-2006 Mercedes (AMG) E55. A $90k+ car selling for $30k - $40k and if torque is a concern you will be very happy with a Merc. I am planning to pick up a E55 for a daily driver soon.

Looked up the torque number and quite surprise the M5 is just 23 more than the 550i :(
How much hp more would the 550i gain for the Dinan intake & exhaust system, any1 know?

Go to Dinan website:
Dinan 550i Intakes (http://www.dinancars.com/store/product.php?productid=3989&cat=430&page=1)
Dinan 550i Exhaust (http://www.dinancars.com/store/product.php?productid=3987&cat=430&page=1)
;)
Why not go for the 535i over the 550i - much newer and more advanced engine and easy to mod for better gains...

300 hp vs. 360 hp
I own a twin turbo 3rd gen RX7, it is a PITA. Of course the BMW twin system is more advance, but why only 3 cyl get turboed?

well after looking up the E55 AMG, this could be what I need. Power, price, interior, etc...after all it's a Benz

You might also want to look into a CLS. I liked it better than the E, and almost got the CLS 63.

The CLS back seat entry is not pleasant for adults. You will hit your head getting in and you will hit your head getting out. Having said that, the car is a little better balanced than the E class.

OK, so if your ducking challenged http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/rlpiii/retard.gif and ride a lot in the back seat, then get the E.

We wouldn't have any issue with the CLS rear seat entry...after all most of our acquaintants and relatives are short...except me LOL!
I like the E55 & E63 interior more than the BMW.
516 lb-ft of torque...rather have that than 383.
