View Full Version : Looking into the GTR as a replacement for my M. Splain me them!

So... thinking about getting a new toy and selling the M.
Looking into trying to find a blue 2012. I think there is one coming in down in round rock two weeks from now. What dealer should I go to here in DFW? What should I know?

Do you have any specific questions?
They really are great cars and I almost got one before the Lambo...
P.S- PM me about your M3 when you get ready to sell it. I would be interested as I've always wanted an HPF M3.

Are the 2012's truly worth the money vs a 2011 or 2010? What exactly did they change/fix vs the earlier models? I would need to make the purchase before the new year, so I can't wait for the 2013, which is apparently going to be "better" than the 2012.
Main reason I am selling is to get back into a warranty, and get out of the mod game. (for the most part haha) I will likely only be keeping this car for 2 years or so.
What is the best DFW dealer to go to for work? I am used to the experience I get at Classic/Boardwalk, would I ever get anything like that from a Nissan dealer?
How does the car truly compare to a 99xT? One of my issues is that I can't find a dealer in DFW that has one to test drive. My dad's guy at Boardwalk really wants me in a Porsche, and will work with us quite a bit, it seems the Nissan dealers are going for MSRP or telling you to walk.
You guys will be the first to know when my car is for sale, I have several people who have already asked about it.

If I was in the market for one, my personal preference would be to get a 2011 and save the extra cash. Specially since you will only have the car for 2 years. FYI- Lambo Dallas has a red 2011 on the showroom floor. The 2011 has the smoothest drive save for the 2012 and can be updated to the LC4 launch control that the 2012's have. The interior and exterior aesthetics are not that different IMO.
I cannot speak about dealerships as I have never brought the Green GTR to a dealer.
The GTR does not compare the the 996 Turbo I had... The Turbo was more raw, visceral and enjoyable. The GTR is a large car and can do things you wouldn't think a car that size can do. It's just too boring comparatively speaking.
This is all my opinion, I'm sure others will disagree but you should really drive one to see if it's what you like/want.
If you are choosing between a 997 turbo or a GTR... It's a no brainer IMO.
Tejas500

Go Porsche, I am considering one at the moment as well. Go take one for a spin, you will fall in love.
GT-R is definitely a more sterile drive than a Turbo, imo, but it's physics-defying in its capabilities. They are very fast, and very competent at the track despite their weight and size.
A little too clinical for my taste, I like something more involving. My 997 Turbo experience was that it was a little boring, too. 996 Turbo was a blast. 997.2 Turbos are better than 997.1's. Any of them are more exciting than a GT-R imo (nothing against GT-Rs, just not my cup of tea).
And if you want to row your own, then there's just no choice...
Just throwing it out there, do yourself a service and drive a 997.1 GT3 if you are shopping Turbos. Expect to pay $60-70, which is similar to a lightly used GT-R. If you are used to the "ultimate driving machine" feel of the M3, a GT3 might be more up your alley than a Turbo...

I have been hankering for a GTR recently as well. I know 997 would probably be a more "proper" car, but I just can't stop thinking about the fact that everybody and their brother has a Porsche in DFW. I just like having cars that are different...
I.e I moved here from Detroit...there are tons of CTS-Vs up north, and have only seen ONE in 4 months in Dallas.

Funny, I see a V almost every day. I'm also amazed at the number of Panameras I see.
I've driven neither the GT-R or the 911 Turbo, but the resounding thing I hear from GT-R drivers is the amount of tech in that car makes it "easy" for almost anyone to drive well.

Very different animals they are.
Nash said it pretty well as far as the driving experience goes....
Sure the GTR is easy to drive, but to really push it hard you still have to know what you're doing. Unfortunately it doesn't do it by itself. With that being said, its not the same experience as when pushing a Porsche hard. My P-car experience is limited to a GT3, but that car is just an absolute blast to drive. The feedback is great along with the ergonomics. I think it would be a fantastic upgrade coming from your M.
I would definitely have a GTR in the stable as its an enjoyable car, but I think I would be driving the Porsche more often.
mbowdo20
10-05-2011, 09:29 AM
I guess a GT3 would feel more like an upgrade if my M were still stock, I am just worried if I don't get something that is close to what I have now that the mod bug will bite me again to get it back. Boost is a powerful drug haha. It looks like I have some test driving to do!

I have to throw my hat in the GT3 ring too. I realize it will have less power than an HPF M3, but that really isn't the point. You really should drive one. It's a type of car that will kick ass at the track, bone stock, be a blast to drive, and yet be totally civilized. GT3s aren't really a car for heavy modders.
Of course, you could always look to the domestic side of the pond.....
...torque is one hell of a drug, too......

Will you ever have to use the backseat for humans? Not sure if that's an important consideration, but the P's backseat is laughable. You can fit a kid in the GTR (even in a booster) without nearly as much fanfare.
Of course I prefer my P cars slower and rawer. This traction control stuff is for sissies.

Think I am going to go with a GTR, unless I find a GT3 that has exactly what I want, and at the price I want before that. If nothing else I will keep and enjoy it for a year or two then get a "real" car. HAHA Thanks for the help all, if anyone happens to see a blue 2012 on a lot someplace give me a PM.

I was going to, but we were in a hurry, my sister was having surgery this afternoon and we wanted to get lunch before we went out to the hospital.
I did find I liked the red MUCH more in person... still not sold that I could drive a red car. hurm.

New ones have folding buckets, can you stuff the clubs behind the seats? I'm not a golfer so I have no frame of reference. And of course it wouldn't work if you put a harness/roll bar in...

Well, spent two hours out at the dealer today. They did the 3 man song and dance, bringing out pieces of paper with numbers and leaving me sitting at a table alone for minutes at a time, never offered me a drink or anything. I would expect this sort of thing buying a used Versa, but common... They wouldn't let me test drive the car, and wouldn't get me a print off of the car data if it had been launched or hit the rev limiter. The car doesn't have any options on it like the rear camera or the floor mats, or the car cover, in essence a base premium with a sticker at $89,500 when it was new. It was apparently a repo from a guy who didn't make his payments, and now has 1,100 miles on it, seats are a bit worn now, and a few blemishes on the interior (aka you can tell it was used). I offered them 85 cash and they turned me down. I guess they like their GTR a bit more than I do. Unless they are willing to give me a real number, let me drive the car, and give me a report on the car I won't be going back. With the new 2013 not too far out, you would think they would want this off their lot.

Well, here's a suggestion for you. I know, I know, it's a Ford, but pick up a Boss 302 (not Laguna since there's no back seat), for about 44k, spend 16k at Hennessy and get a blown 302 with matching 3/36 warranty (http://www.hennesseyperformance.com/hpe650-boss-302.html). Take it to Park Cities Ford for service (their service dept is great). With the money you save you can get custom interior too! :) I suspect, with those mods you would be holding your own against the P-car and the GT-R assuming they are stock, in fact, I think you'd be lapping a bit faster. Oh, and you will still get to enjoy a car that not a lot of people have.

They wouldn't let you test drive it? No way I'm buying a car without test driving it, it's like it's built into your mind. You buy a car, you test drive it. Hope your luck changes today!

The lead manager called me today to ask about my experience yesterday. I told him the whole thing, and let him know what I had offered the day before. He said, that his salesmen had gone too low even at the 90 they offered, and that he felt he could sell it for the "high 90's." (Keep in mind this is a USED base model, not the black edition!) I said I guess there is an idiot born every day and hung up.
Going to contact some of the more reputable dealers I have been referred to from here and start looking again.

Give Courtesy Nissan a call if you're still interested. I picked up my 370z for just under 36k (sticker of 39k) with five miles on it. If you're serious they are a lot easier to work with.
Also, avoid at all costs Trophy Nissan. NEVER NEVER NEVER go there. You will regret it. I purchased my Frontier there several years ago and have refused to go back for even as much as service. I take all my business to Courtesy for parts, service, etc.

Trophy, Trophy, Trophy Nissan....haha. stupid commercials. Sorry about the bad experience, mbow. Downside to GT-R and ZR1 ownership is having to deal with Nissan and Chevrolet dealers. Luckily, I have a good service guy (for any warranty repairs, none so far, knock on wood) and I really didn't get too jerked around when I bought my ZR1. Just about 5-10 minutes of game playing before I walked out and they chased me into the parking lot and took my deal.

Trophy Nissan is good place to buy a car but not a good place to get it serviced. Bankston Nissan off I-35 is probably the only Nissan dealer I would go to.

Seriously though, lately even I have been flirting with the thought of a GT-R ... maybe a 2013. We'll see.

I entertained the thought, until I got on NAGTROC. The maintenance costs are ridiculous! Last I remember, customer pay on an engine is $55k, a trans is $20k, and a brake job was $7k, not to mention the services. If it was more reasonably priced, I wouldn't mind getting one.

Engine... if it goes. (have not seen a single stock one go)
Trans... if it goes. (have not seen one go that wasn't abused or heavily tracked)
Brake job, yes if you have Nissan do it. You can get rotors and pads for under 2k, not bad for those brakes.
Oil changes are 110, same as my bmw.
35k service is 1.2k, around the same as a major service on any performance car in that price range, less than some.

The only thing BMW has is the maintenance for 4 years/50K
That's the only negative thing I've heard about the GT-R is the conversation of complain about the maintenance prices...

Trans is stronger than what most ppl think. It will take some abuse even if the car is modfied but only to the certain lvl of modification.
Engine can be sourced for about 7k. It needs a re-build.
Any routine maintenances will be much cheaper to do outside of the Nissan dealers.
I use T1 Race Development/Injector Dynamics. They have been working on my GTR. I'm biased. They do good work and their price is very competitive.

Are the 2012's truly worth the money vs a 2011 or 2010? What exactly did they change/fix vs the earlier models? I would need to make the purchase before the new year, so I can't wait for the 2013, which is apparently going to be "better" than the 2012.
I had both a 2011 and 2012 GT-R. The '12 is definitely a nice upgrade.
Here are the things you get with a 2012 GT-R that the '11 doesn't have:
1. More power. The '12 has 45 more ponies and you can feel it. The difference certainly isn't night and day and can easily be overcome in an earlier car with an exhaust and tune.
2. Launch control. This is a bit of a gimmick for me since I don't drag race, but it is pretty impressive. Also, the warranty issues are now worked out.
3. More aggressive tuning of the suspension and stability control. You can get the back end to step out nicely while under power in the 2012. It feels a lot like a rear driver except when you reach that point that you think you might lose the car the AWD pulls you through. The 2012 also rides a little better in comfort mode.
4. Bigger brakes. I couldn't tell a difference in feel, but the rotors are a little bigger.
5. Upgraded interior. My 2011 had some of the upgrades that are featured in the 2012 like automatic on headlights and an upgraded MFD with better resolution and better software. The earlier cars have neither of these upgrades. The 2012 adds better knobs on the center stack, carbon fiber overlays and darker accent trim. It is definitely an upgrade over the 2011, but not by very much. If you get the Black Edition you can get Recaros, but my car didn't have these.
6. Exterior changes. I think the new front bumper on the 12 looks more aggressive. Some folks probably disagree. I also like the new wheels better, but not by much. The new rear diffuser is nice, but I don't think it really improved the looks that much.
If you are planning to leave your car bone stock I would say the 2012 is worth the extra money. It is a nice evolution of the R35. However, if you plan to mod the car I would try and find a 2011. You will get the better display, added sound insulation and auto headlights like the 2012. With the money saved you can then turn your 2011 into a car that will out-perform a new GT-R and maybe even save some money.
FYI, I bought both of my GT-Rs from Grubbs Nissan in Bedford. They took good care of me on both deals. Bill McKenzie is my contact out there.

Someone is stealing my stripper lines! :eviltongue:
The 2013 model would be neat; but they need to be more supportive of *any* performance driving in a private setting... unless they've changed policy.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to discourage you or talk negatively about it. Just stating for me (being a Viper owner), I couldn't justify getting one. Dodge has covered everything for me under warranty, and the out of pocket expenses have been ridiculously cheap, all things considering. Oil change is ~$150 because it's almost 12 quarts of oil, differential service was under $200, trans service the same.
I think the GTR would be a fun car, but I would be extremely pissed the first time they handed me any bill for 4-5 digits, when the car is under warranty. That's what turned me away, that's all.

I know someone may attempt to revoke my card for this ... but the primary thing I have against the GT3 is there is no practical way to get golf clubs into it...
I'm pretty sure you could Brett.
I've had a lot of luggage in the space behind the seats and like Nash said, the seats fold down. I've actually had 2 adults in the back. There is more room without the mini seats that come in the Carrera or Turbo models.
