buy a phone cable with 4 wires(by wires i mean where you see the cable connect to the plug there's 3 and then 4), cut one end off and your done or pay the V1 price for the same thing.
I use this in my m5 and it works just fine.

If you're running the V1 mirror (as was the case here) the hardwire adapter from Valentine is required. If all you need is to power the V1 by itself then the phone wire will work fine. :)

curious what makes the 2 different or whats different on the mirror making the phone wire useless?

If you're using the Valentine Concealed Display, which is what is used for the mirror, you have to have both the V1 and concealed displays plugged in. The only way for the V1 to send data to the remote concealed display is by having it plugged into the accessory side of the hard wire adapter. There is no physical "out" port on the V1 to connect the concealed display.

I have to agree with DallasM5, you guys must like to throw away money. Take some old telephone cables cut them off and wire direct - piss on giving your money away. It's been a while since I wired my radar detector and concealed display, but there are only 4 wires. All the stupid power sadpter does is make the connections.
2 of the wires are power and ground - both miust go to a good ground and a good switched power line. The other two (data and mute) go only between the detector and the concealed display and they must be reversed between the detector and concealed display, per Valentine manual.
Detector - 4 wires - 1 wire ground to car gorund, 1 wire power to switched power, 2 wires (data and mute) to concealed display (only if you are using a concealed display).
Concealed display - 4 wires - 1 wire ground to car gorund, 1 wire power to switched power, 2 wires (data and mute) to detector.
To help here is how the mute works (if you want to make your own remote mute button) and it shows what pin is what. If you get data and mute swapped - no biggie it won't work correct - just swap them.

From Valentine web site:
Making Your Own Power Cord
Valentine One uses standard RJ-11 (modular) telephone connectors. You can use any telephone cable (the one that runs from the wall jack to the phone) for a power cord. Complete cables are available in many lengths at electrical or building-supply stores.
You can also make your own power cord using bulk phone cable cut to whatever length you choose. To attach the RJ-11 connectors, you will need a special attaching tool. Bulk phone cables, loose connectors, and the attaching tool are available in most electrical or building-supply stores.
NOTE: The sequence of wires must be reversed from one end to the other.

Good info Gerald, thanks for posting. The hard wire adapter is included with the purchase of a new Valentine 1 so fortunately most wont have to hot wire it to make it work. :)
Oh and the sequence of wires isn't reversed but the orientation of the connector from one end to the other is.

That is what sequence of wire reverse from one end to the other means......same as orientation of connector being reversed........ the wording is direct from Valentine's Manual page 20.
