View Full Version : ***CANCELLED*** - DFWAC Track Day at Eagle's Canyon - March 24
RaceMX-M3
01-12-2010, 12:19 PM
Classic BMW has scheduled a full day track event for the DFWAC at ECR :thumbsup2:
Date: Wednesday, March 24
Time: 8:00am - 4:00pm
Location: Eagles Canyon Raceway
Available Classes: Beginner, Novice, Advanced
Schedule: TBA
Track Sessions: Unlimited
Instructors: YES
Lunch: Provided
Registration before Feb 25th: $199
Registration after Feb 25th: $249
Payment Options: Cash, check, Paypal to paypal@dfwautoclub.com
The schedule for the day will be determined by how many participate and how many drivers we have in each class. We need at least 20 people to commit to coming to make this work and will limit the number of participants to provide everyone with as much time on the track as they want. I will confirm, but race fuel should be available for purchase and lunch will be included.
If you want to participate in the event please reply or send me a pm asap and let me know your skill level and whether you want an instructor available. A $100 deposit is required to reserve your slot , we will confirm final attendance and collect the balance prior to the event. We would enjoy seeing as many DFWAC members as possible participate in the track event and will reach out to other local track enthusiasts if we need additional cars.

We need to know who's planning on attending asap. I will contact Classic's race team manager and get a firm cutoff date, but I would imagine we will need to have a confirmed (paid) list at least 30 days before the event (maybe sooner).

I'm going to have to give Classic a commitment in the next couple of weeks so sooner is better. If there isn't enough interest and the event is scrapped everyone will get full refunds.
I'm interested as well as long as it doesn't conflict with work. Is the deposit refundable? It's hard planing something so far in advance

The deposit is refundable if the event is cancelled. Otherwise it is transferrable.

No, we have the track to ourselves. Since this is our own private event we have flexibility with regards to how the classes are defined - however I'm sure we will not stray much from the qualifications used at other track events.

Track events are almost always rain or shine as you'll tend to learn more when driving wet... If you're worried, bring some dry cleaner bags and pull them over your seats.

Ditto. Running in the rain forces you to slow down and become smoother in your actions.
We did a mixed bag ( AMG / M / S-Line ) event with a Lotus thrown in for good measure at MSR. Rained 90% of the event.
Was an eye opener for alot of the drivers.

If worse comes to worse, I can let the DFW Miata guys know about it. They eat up discounted track time and tend to be pretty experienced (eg. will not be annoying/in the way)
Perhaps if there's a threat of cancellation due to low attendance we can open it up to them.

I wouldn't call this a "discounted" rate honestly.
An Apex event is $195/day. A ECR open track day (on a Saturday) is $150 + tax.
This is on a weekday (hard to get off work) and $200 on the low end.
When you're talking about inviting people with $2k cars, the definition of "cheap track time" shifts greatly ::D

Wet track = smooth driving or you lose it. MSR when wet is a real tricky course with a rear drive torque laden car. I've never driven EC and will be in on this as soon as I can confirm that I'll have my new wheels before then.

If you're buying a helmet, I strongly recommend you get an SA2005 rated helmet. It will work for ANY club on any track. A M or SA2000 rated helmet will soon be not allowed.
DOT helmets are definitely not allowed anywhere.

Good advice.
I would also add that trying on different brands makes a big difference, you never know which one will fit your face the best. Lastly, you'll want to get something lightweight as it will give your neck muscles a workout. After a few turns on the track (especially in hot weather) you can get fatigued really easy.
I would go by Smiley's Race shop (http://www.smileysracing.com/locations.php) to try stuff on. Even if you don't buy it there, they have a big selection of sizes and brands to try out.

If you want a really light weight helmet, HJC has two that are made with a full carbon fiber shell. They are super light, and also save driver weight by emptying your wallet.:D

....
New helmets that meet the 2010 standard are available.
Edit: That was info I received from Lamb Honda back in mid December. It turns out (after some checking) that the new standard won't be available until the Fall of 2010. Sorry for any confusion.

I spoke with a some guys at the meet this morning and it looks like quite a few people are waiting to see what the attendace and final cost will be before comitting. We are going to need a minimum number of confirmed registrations by Feb 24th (30 days out) so here's what we've decided to do. The entry fee will be a flat $199 for everyone that registers and pays before Feb 25th, registration between 2/25 - 3/24 will be $249. A minimum of 20 paid registrations will be required to move forward with the track day - if we have to cancel for any reason everyone will receive a full refund. Hopefully this will make the decision to participate a lot easier for everyone. :thumbsup2:

Guys, I'm a member up there and can help answer some questions.
Yes, ECR does allow passengers but they need to have a helmet...and a strong stomach.
ECR is not very strict about checking specs on helmets but I would suggest going with a good DOT approved helmet for your safety. Motorcycle helmets work just fine.
ECR is very slick if it's wet. Especially in the race line. I've been out there with BMW as an instructor for a wet day and I can tell you we had quite a few students go into low speed spin outs with only a light rain coming down. You must have traction control fully on.
If you're new to the track, you really need to sit with an instructor for a few sessions or do plenty of lead and follows. The track has some blind corners and it will take at least a couple sessions before you can safely manage your way around.
Unlike MSR, this track has some really big braking corners and it's imperative that you have your brakes up to the task. Make sure you've recently changed your fluid and that your pads are in good shape.
By the way, I'll be up there tomorrow (taking the bike). Anyone is more than welcome to drive out there and check out the track....members are usually more than happy to take passengers around for a few laps (but remember to bring a helmet). Also, if anyone is interested in going as my guest tomorrow and does have some track experience, feel free to send me a PM.

Also have a cooling system issue in the M5 I should really get fixed before doing something like this and got to find the time. Wednesdays conflict with my work schedule, but would love to go. Going to see if I can manipulate my work schedule? Also have a cooling system issue in the M5 I should really get fixed before doing something like this and got to find the time. (Runs too cool per the OBD error which I'm thinking is good but it's causing the DME to leave it in choke mode and I don't want to fry my cats)
I noticed on the ECR web site they have Tues 23rd marked down as the BMW track day, are you sure it's on the 24th?

Thanks for the heads up, I will confirm the date with Classic.

Classic BMW's race team manager has been at the track all week and I haven't been able to reach him. I will get confirmation early next week.. hang tight and don't worry about the cutoff for the $199 since we have this minor hickup.

Scott, have you been able to confirm the 24th yet?
I can give you cash on Saturday at C&C if you're there.

I just got word from Tom, the event on the 23rd is a separate event they have scheduled. Our event hasn't officially been put on the calendar b/c once you book it you own it. He is having trouble getting instructors for the 24th and is out of town until next week so in light of the uncertainty I'm opting to cancel the 24th. I apologize for any inconvenience to those that have scheduled time off. I will process refunds asap to those that paid via paypal. If you paid cash I will have it with me on Saturday at C&C. If you're not going to be at C&C please contact me and I will make other arrangements to get the cash back to you.
As an alternative there is a track event scheduled at TMS on April 30 that Steve (SAFE4NOW) is helping coordinate. Details here http://www.dfwautoclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2839

The Mile? Those come a dime-a-dozen. Hell, even the highway department puts up little green signs to designate every time you go through The Mile.

After I get through March, I will be more than happy to help put an event together for DFWAC members...
Scott, thank you for trying, it is never easy to get the stars and planets to align!

I heard MSR is a less bumpy track than ECR? But also heard ECR had made improvements.
Anyone been to the airstrip at Mineral Wells? Pretty cheap to rent out from what I hear?

I can get MSR for sure, usually in groups of 16, with different options of 1.7, 1.3, maybe even 3.1....
I am thinking I can get some backing as well, keeping the per car cost under $200 for the 1.7 , much less for the 1.3 ( if anyone wants )
anyways... more to follow
I need to get the TMS event done before putting up another one.

If you're interested in the Miserable Hells airpark, look at doing a texas time trials event out there.

That sucks. Tom and I were both in Miami for the Grand Am Rolex/Continental races, I need to give him a call.
Ill be on my way back from VIR the few days prior to the TMS event, Im not sure I can pull that one off. Bummer.
I am a member at MSR, it just is not as fun/entertaining as ECR.
