My buddy is looking into purchasing a first-gen CTS-V. He found one in Cali in the Blue Granite that he likes and is very interested. It's an '06 (6.0L) with 38k miles. It's loaded (heated seats, sunroof, nav) and they are asking 26k. Only thing that sucks is he'll have to have it driven to him since he has a trade in so they will throw that charge onto the price. What do you guys think? Good deal? Thanks I appreciate it.

Are they giving him a decent price for his trade-in? That will be a factor. Does he have a color preference? Another factor.
Is this the car?

Yes that is it. Yeah he'd really like either that blue or else black. I'm not sure he's received a trade-in value yet.

how does the trade in effect the tax situation if you do it outside of the state?
Here the value of the trade is deducted from the value of the car being purchased and the tax is calculated from the amount left over.
Say you're buying a $40,000 car and your trade in value is $20,000.
You'll pay 6.25% of $20,000 rather than $40,000.
Tax on $40,000 = $2,500
Tax on $20,000 = $1,250
Your dealer knows this and will use this as leverage to get you to trade your car in at a lower than CarMax offered value. Personally if they make it a wash or net profit for me I accept their offer since the paperwork is a lot easier (one transaction, etc.). Although a couple times CarMax has offered me way more than I could sell the car for or trade it in (I think they valued on the wrong trim level) so they got to buy my car that day .

I would sure think it would be based on the after-trade value.

Personally no i don't think that's a great deal, seems about average. If he likes the car it may be worth it but id do some more shopping.

On an out of state transaction? I'm going to guess that you're going to pay sales tax on a stated value from the state, foreign car registration fees and inspection fees and anything else txdot can get from you .

I just got done buying my First Gen V... I agree with Junkie, that is not a good price. Lower $20K's for any 06/07 with less than 50K miles is a good deal.

I've been looking also but I think I'm going with the 2nd generation. Last night my wife told me she wanted to make the AMG her daily so I'm going to trade/sell her Sequoia when I find a gently used I like.

Well alright now he spotted this 335i and can't decide which he likes more. I don't really know much about re-sale on Bimmers so I REALLY don't know if this is a good deal.

Same price, more miles, aftermarket wheels and it looks like it's got a cat-back or at least tips. It sure looks like it's in great shape. No NAV, though. CTS-V vs. 335i?

Depends what the guy is looking for... I've had 12 BMW's and I decided I wanted TQ and cheap mods (compared to BMW mods) over refinement and build quality.
