For any of you race fans there is going to be a mega race at NTK http://ntkarters.com/. If you have never seen a pro level shifter race this will impress even the most avid F1 fan! With around 40 shifters coming in from around the country (Canada and Mexico too) it will be very busy on the .5 mile Denton track. If you like what you see you can contact Michael Johnson to set up a track day and rental of some race prepped karts to check it out for yourself. His email is contact@superkartchallenge.com. To give you an idea of what it takes to drive a shifter kart at NTK you will negotiate 9 corners, shift up/down 27 times, reach 80 mph, corner over 3g's, brake around 2.5g's and complete a lap in about 36 seconds (the pros will be in the 35's!). For comparison a Bugatti Veyron does 0-100-0mph in 9.9 seconds...so does a 125 shifter kart. So, it is a little busy and very fast. Myself and a few other drivers go to the track most every Tues afternoon as well so feel free to check it out then with us too. I will miss this race and coming Tues do to testing at Carolina Motorsports Park, but after that you can count on seeing us at the track on Tues weather permitting. Later, J :driver:s
Race is SUNDAY!!!!

For you auto x-ers and road racers out there, if you have never experienced a 125 shifter kart on a track, you are seriously missing out.. The is no vehicle that can come close to the performance of a shifter kart this side of F1..
Are you guys renting moto shifters or icc?

I am just a friend of Micheal's as he is a class act in the DFW Karting scene. He rents Stock 125's and single speed 4-Cycle karts (50mph or so). ICC and Open 125 classes (what I raced in the late 90's) are pretty much dead in the sprint karting world. A blueprinted Stock 125 makes about 37hp...open motors were 45hp and only a little faster. ICC's were rockets on long tracks, but for reliability and cost measures the Karting community has pretty much gone to the blueprinted stock 1999 Honda 125 with a 97' 6-speed trans for everything from local to pro outings. BTW, the race is at night so if you are going to the DE at MSR you can still make the standing start Main.

Open class 125's make WAAAYY more power than the Honda motors.. I used to race ICC/open in 01-03 in Vancouver.. I was going to get back into it here, but everybody runs the moto class.. The Honda 125's dont even compare to the ICC 125 motors that I raced from parilla and pavissi... They lack that crazy 2 stroke punch from 9k-20k rpm that was so much fun (especially my rotary valve pavissi, it made 58hp on Italian Motor's dyno in Vancouver).. The Hondas may be more reliable, but they are not even close to as fast as a rotary valve pavissi...

Here is a little clip with 7 local guys at NTK in 2008...I think they will start 26 in the main Saturday night! Will hate to miss it, but I am sure Mike will get me some video of it for me. If anyone heads out be sure to say hello to Mike...he will be with all the Arrow Karts. J

I haven't been out there in a couple of years. Is the road heading out to the track still pretty rough?

Yes, it is still a dirt/gravel road so I would not recommend the freshly waxed vehicle for this outing. J

Do they have a division for kids? How young can they start? Do they make slower karts for kids?

Check out the NTK link in this thread's original post. The short answers are: There are lots of classes and speed capabilities. Classes for kids start as young as 5 years old. Here's a link to the various classes: http://www.ntkarters.com/racing-classes-at-ntk.html
