So I came back from TX2K11 wanting one thing. A Supra with a lot of HP!
I thought about a TT Viper 97-98ish but I don't think I would enjoy it as much as I would be driving it.
Please discuss.
Here is some Supra porn:

I would get one too if they weren't so damn expensive for a nice low mileage one. If done right, they are still one of the sexiest cars on the road, imho.

Prices have come down drastically over the past year or two... I've always wanted one but thought they were overpriced.
I can get a well sorted clean one that's a good starting point for around $40-$50k.
Here is one example, just too much show and not enough go though:

Another nice example, this one can be had for $40K:

same car & it is the cleanest white supra i've ever seen. SW owned it in the second pic and then Woon bought it (his garage in the 1st pic). think he was trying to sell it but dunno if it actually ever sold.

I hear you but I can't justify spending $40-50k on a 16 year old car

x2.. I respect their performance and some do look very good, but I just couldn't stomach paying 40K for a 16yo Toyota....

They sure do hold their value, however. I can't say that about any of the cars I have previously owned.

All good valid points... But the price is the price and is still dictated by demand and rarity. There are classics worth more because of this. The Supra is impressive even by todays standards. How many cars can say that?
Either way I'm not going out of my way to find one right now. If one were to fall in my lap though I would have to seriously consider it.

I had a supra that I put the Garret T78 kit on. That car was nothing but a pain though. It ran good on a few occasions, but never when I went to the drag strip...

+1....I guess Im partially bitter bc I can't afford a clean one at their current prices :(. If I could, I would though so I say if you find a nice one that has some money already in it, go for it :thumbsup2:

They are a lot of fun on a big hwy stretch, I'm a fan of that.. But you might feel differently after trying to flog one through a few twisties.. Not real confidence inspiring when the 20yo chassis starts to really show it's age. Especially coming out of a 996TT. You need to go for a ride in a 800whp centri vette..:thumbsup2:

Ya, I have never driven or been in a Supra so I don't know if I would enjoy it on rallies etc.
Speaking of Vettes, are you selling your Vette or parting it out?

I'm really on the fence about it.. I kind of want a new platform, but I have so much invested in the vette and I know I would take a huuuge bath on selling it. The car is a lot of fun, I'm just going to take a breather from it for a few weeks while I get the buick back together and decide if I want to keep it.. If I am ever serious about selling it, you'll be the first person I would tell. :thumbsup2:

I thought they were really cool for about 30 minutes but I'm over that now. The straight six they put in there is bullet proof tho. Like Blacksheep said, you have to respect their performance.
The tuner I use has been chomping at the bit to do something new with the Supra. If your game, give him a call. For an extra $30k he can get you a 200 mph tee shirt too.
When are you guys getting the McLaren?

Ya, I think I'll want to add a Supra to the stable but I dont want to get rid of the Porsche for it.
Were told we get the McLaren in May sometime... Should be the first orange one in TX.

I don't think 50k would get Will's car. He has a lot of brand new technology in it. And it's a low mile 97.
OP should go for a ride with him if you think you want a 1k supra. You will definitely buy one after that. You want a car with Tilton clutch, and Motec IMO.

I have found one!
It has a Tilton triple and Motec M800. Fully built etc. 1100whp on E85. Not as fast as Wills but should still be plenty fun.
It's not a done deal yet though... I'll keep everyone posted.

You will want to find out what options are enabled on the M800. Anti-Lag, Boost by Gear, Traction Control and Launch Control, they are all separate options on the M800 and they each have price that isn't insignificant.

Some advice.
NEVER BUY BUILT!
Buy as close to stock as possible and with exterior/interior/mileage in mind.
Then build the motor ground up. This goes for ANY car. Buying another persons high performance car is also buying their problems.
$35K low mileage STOCK 6spd is reasonable. Add another $25K and you're well over 1k rwhp with supporting drive-train.

I'm going to somewhat disagree with this, both routes can be done right IMHO. I prefer buying built and parting it out, thats what I did with my car and it worked out great!
I've actually talked to the OP about this. Dont know if he ever ended up scooping that car up or not though. A Supra is an amazing car man, the driver feedback and experience that a Supra offers is leaps and bounds better then any Vette or Viper I've ever been in.

Buying built to part out is fine. Buying built as your end all application is what I was referring to.
