What's more fun than thrashing some high performance AMGs around an autocross course??? Doing it when Mercedes AMG supplies the cars, gas and tires of course! :D
My oldest son and I went to the AMG performance drive event yesterday afternoon and had a blast tossing the C63, E63, CLS63 and SL63 around the course. The CLS was the new model with the TT 5.5 engine that won't even be released until June, do it was kind of cool to drive it before it even goes on sale. All in all it was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with my son. I'll post up some pics from the event soon.

I was out there all morning today and it was so damned windy to be standing in line to drive. But it was fun, nevertheless. C36 was most fun by far on the course.

It was windy yesterday too, but not as bad as it seemed today.

Hey bj, I'm pretty sure I drove with you in the right seat in the C36. Great car and great event. I was the short guy and probably the oldest there!

The C63 AMG is an amazing car! I'm a huge BMW nut, but I think I like the C63 AMG with the P31 package more than the M3. That motor is crazy good!
I'm not sure if we were in the car together or not... I was in the C on Saturday, but not today. I spent most of my time in the E63 or SL63 today. Were you wearing a Porsche hat?
If your instructor kept saying "Throttle, throttle, throttle!!!" and "Foot to the floor!!!" in a very excited and animated way, it was probably me.

Yep, Porsche hat. I forgot I took one turn with the SL63. Wasn't very impressed with it's balance compared to the C63.

The SL63 weighs almost 700lbs more than the C63. That's the big difference. After I did a few more runs in the SL63, I decided that it's can be a lot of fun! It rotates very easily and likes to be tossed around, whereas the C63 is a real drivers car. I would bet that the C63 with the performance package could lap most tracks faster than the SL63.
Didn't you tell me you had a 914/6 with a 2.5L?

Yeah, I signed up for it and I have the 7:30 time slot on the 16th. The dates are actually the 15th, 16th and 17th, IIRC.
I was invited to the AMG event but decided against it this year. I'm kind of sad I passed on it.

Yep, that's me. Had the "6" for 35 years! About 220 HP and 2,000 lb. makes that car fun.

BJ,
I was definitely in the car with you on Saturday as I can recall those exact words! :thumbsup2: Not sure if you'll be at MSR at one of our upcoming dates there, but if you will be, we can take my C63 out for a few laps. It's dropped on KW V3 coilovers and is putting down way more HP than from the factory.:D Plus we can turn off traction control.

Nice, I would love it. I'm a big fan of KW. I have the KW Club Sport kit on my M Coupe.
I try to make it to the track as often as I can. I'm at every The Driver's Edge event. The only events I miss are when they conflict with race weekends. April is a busy month for me--AMG last weekend, The Driver's Edge at MSR-H next weekend, ChumpCar at TWS, and then NASA at TWS!

That's a busy schedule for sure. I'll be at MSR in Cresson 4/30-5/1 and usually try to make several Driver's Edge events each season. I'm sure we'll meet up at the track one weekend. :thumbsup2:

Crap! There goes the DFWAC forums! Who let Jeff create an account?
Jeff, aka the cone eater, is the man responsible for keeping you guys going in the tire roasting AMG's. While I was busy representing Clown Shoe Motorsports in the cars, Jeff was manning the Clown Shoe Motorsports trailer where he kept busy wrapping those 18 & 19 inch AMG wheels with fresh Continental rubber.
I do agree that those huge 6.3L V8's sound awesome. I thought the SL63 AMG sounded the best. The E63 has the exact same motor, but it seemed to sound better in the SL.

You need to hear that big V8 when it has long tube headers and no cats...The growl is noticeably more aggressive! :D

AMG's latest marketing material calls it a 6.3L. We had "training" before the event and they gave us a manual to study with all the specs. You are correct, it's 6.2L, but AMG wants it called a 6.3L.

Didn't they make fun of that on Top Gear saying AMG wanted to call it a 6.3L because of the heritage? If they really wanted a 6.3L engine why not make one? :hmmmm2:

AMG is even calling the new 5.5 turbos 6.3's. I thought they just referred to them as 6.3's and not 6.3l's.
