Hello everyone,
Just joined the forum this morning. It is great to be apart of something local in the DFW area. I plan on making it out to the Saturday meet at some point in the near future.
One quick question...
I just purchased an 08' m5 about a month ago. I was thinking about purchasing the ASR cold air intake used from someone on the m5board. Does anyone have this modification? Horsepower additions? I checked the ASR sight and they claimed 20 RWHP. I just wanted to ask and see if anybody had any feedback on this.

Welcome to the club. There's a lot of M5 owners in our group and most have extensive experience/knowledge about modding the car and what the various aftermarket products will deliver. I'm sure some of the M5 guys will chime in when they see your thread. Look forward to meeting you at one of our local events.

Wow, I guess ASR finally finished their site. I have yet to hear much about ASR's CAI - the most popular set up uses the RPI Air scoops which are a tenth of the price and give you some good power. My scoops were the best bang for the buck. The ASR CAI is priced roughly the same as DINAN so I am not sure which one I would pick from the two. You don't lose anything by waiting to hear for more reviews and saving your cash.

I have had the upgraded Dinan intake on my E60 M5 and it definitely made a difference. I believe the feedback on the ASR CAI is positive as well. In fact, they both offer similar performance improvement and the Dinan might give you less grief at the dealer.
You do not need the Dinan software upgrade to get benefit from the Dinan intake upgrade by the way.

Also if you haven't heard removing the completely unnecessary charcoal filters from the air boxes will give you a proven 20 whp immediately. If you aren't familiar grab me at the meet and I will pull them out for you.

I already did the charcoal delete and the RPI scoops including the BMC filters and block off plates. I know by adding the CAI it would completely void out these deletions considering there is no air boxes anymore. Thanks for the positive feedback. I think I will wait until I get the E-Race installed and then make my decision. I plan on being at the meet on Saturday. Hope to see everybody there.

Welcome aboard.
With the Dinan Cold Air intake you can still use the RPI scoops. I have both and it made a big difference. Also you can get Dinan at 15% off direct from Dinan until 2/28 and more off at a good dealership like Classic BMW, especially if you are a member of BMWCCA and you know how to negotiate.
Dyno results are very difficult to show correctly unless you can get you car tested on a dyno in a wind tunnel that varies the air speed with the throttle. RPI did tests of their scoops with the Dinan intakes and had excellent results.

Actually the Dinan setup has airboxes. They just are larger volume and have a higher flow conical filter in them.
The ASR uses a conical filter moved to the front of the car behind the kidney grills and totally removes the air boxes.
Hope this helps.
By the way, I have Dinan intakes plus RPI scoops currently.

+1 This is my setup as well and I highly recommend. Although I have high regard for ASR products as well (I have had most of their mods in the past), I cannot directly comment on the CAI.

One of the reasons I was thinking about getting the ASR CAI is because the price was so good for around $1400. Compareable to the Dinan which is around $2200 with the 15% discount.

They(ASR) have it priced on their site for $2495. I think the Dinan boxes look pretty good visually with the nice carbon fiber.

Use some fiberglass to make yourself an air scoop. It's easy and no heat soaking. Some of the audio shops can fab one for you then paint it any color you want. No angles either to cause turbulance.
Take a look. CAI = down 20hp.

You can make the air scoops with sheet metal.

Yea, and you can make a car with alumininum, glass, plastic, and glue...:)

The AFE and K&N CAI are terrible and do lose power. The ASR and Dinan intake upgrades really add power to the M5/M6.
Also, save the hassle with trying to replicate the scoops. Just by a set from RPI, they're only $199. Surely someone will spend over $200 trying to custom fab something as a one-off. The RPI are proven and I've not heard one bad thing about them.
