Wine Merchant

I'm looking to add a number of bottles to my cellar and wanted to know if anyone has found a good wine merchant in the area. I'm looking to place a 250 bottle order initially and if I like the service will likely order another 500 bottles. Given the number of bottles I'm looking to buy, I'm expecting a decent discount, but plan on spending $4K on the 250 bottles as a benchmark.

Look for "LaCave" prononced LaCav'. Believe the guy who onws it is "Frank". They are off 35 & near Motor Street or Inwood, been a few years since I have been there. They have a bunch of stuff. They are open to the pubilc, but don't really advertise. They supply the restaraunt business. Have lots of older stock. Something you can't get at your average retail store. Greg @ Farpointe in Southlake turned me on to them. Great place to get a 10 or 20 year old bottle of something cool. If you want some good stuff, great place to go. Plus, a 250 bottle order would be a hell of a good sale for them I think. They also have a lot of large format bottles as well, something that can be hard to find. The 6 litres (Jeroboams?) are great for parties, PM me if more questions...

One thing I forgot to add.

Screwed up labels just kill the value of a bottle of wine for retail or restaurant sales. I always ask to see what they have with torn, ripped stained or damaged labels, it all tastes the same, so save the $$$, especially at high end restaurants; Pappa's, Bob's, Del Frisco's, etc. Plus the Sommeliers’ will not act pompous with you if you hit them with this – my experience anyway. They will know you’ve been around the block. I also ask for age (vintage) over everything else; vineyard, region, etc., then decide from there. I am a big Napa fan, but South Africa and Argentina are getting real close to what Napa does, so great value there.

A buddy of mine is a VP @ Republic Wines- they rep many of the California vinyards locally. Not sure what he could do, but he may be able to let you cut out the middle man in such a large transaction. PM me.

Were you able to get taken care of yet?

Chris

Not yet. I've been too busy to actually do this yet, but will take care of it soon. Thankfully my cellar isn't exactly empty.

Please let us know how it goes & what merchant(s) you decide to go with. Perhaps we could convince them to do a DFWAC group buy over a week or so!
