Yu Darvish

Well, there was alot of hype around this game tonight. Yu Darvish gets his first regular season start in the majors. Goes 5 2/3 innings, gives up 8 hits and 5 runs, but had 5 K's and the win. His ERA was 7.94 according to MLB.com. He got a standing ovation from the crowd as he exited and Ogando went in.

What do you guys think of him? I think he's alright...just give him some time and he'll improve. His outing tonight improved by each inning, and had a 1-2-3 in the 5th. He ended up with 110 pitches. 42 came in the first.

Welcome all of the Japanese to the metro, they will be here by the thousands this season to watch him play!

He definitely has the heat but he also has a pretty wicked slider and a decent change up, he just needs some time to adjust to the league and get settled in. Best thing is that he's young, if he plays out right maybe we can hold onto him for many years to come.

Looking forward to another ****-tease of a season!

Tejas

Scary start to the game, but even in that first inning a few of those pitches were just masterful... then the next one would be in the dirt. He was starting to get it by the end. I can't imagine the pressure of your first big league game as a starter with your whole country watching. Like Tejas said, he is young, so hopefully he can grow into a true club asset. Now we just need to have him start pitching like he was every game in Japan...

One thing I also admired was his mental toughness to stay out there despite having a terrible inning in the 1st. I think if any of our other pitchers had a bad start like that, they'd be gone. I remember a game that I was at last year where Holland was gone after 1 2/3 innings after allowing 6 runs.

I wonder what went through his head after that inning was over...:dontknow:

Once he got his nerves under control he did a great job, I'm looking forward to watching him improve throughout the season. It takes a lot mentally to come back from a first inning like that!

Has there ever been a pitcher that has taken himself out of a game between innings??

I was excited for Yu, but I was blown away by Nefti last night. Here's to hoping he can keep it up.

The one pitcher who seems to be blowing things away is Joe Nathan...6 games into the season, and already two blown saves.

Him and Valverde. The guy had over 50 saves last year and never blew one. Already had two this year I think.

Hasn't Rivera blown at least one as well this year?

BlackBird007 04-14-2012 04:33 PM

From what I heard, Darvish had a bit better outing today. He allowed 9 hits and 4 walks, but only allowed 2 runs (one of which was unearned). He collected 4 K's as well.

I think he's starting to get settled in to the American big leagues. Couldn't watch the game at Boardwalk today though, to see how well he was pitching.

I'm definitely interested to see how well he progresses. Growing pains are to be expected, but he gets major kudos from me for composing himself after that first inning of his first start. Most others would have never come back from that, physically and psychologically.

He's showing quite a bit of promise. Feliz, too.

He looked good last outing.

I second this. And to think he allowed just two hits and a run against the Tigers...I'm impressed.

BlackBird007 04-24-2012 09:12 PM

Darvish is having a strong outing. NINE K's through 7 shutout innings. He has only walked two tonight, and got out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam with no damage.

Yu mad New York?

RaceMX-M3 04-24-2012 11:40 PM

Awesome job by Darvish tonight. Glad to see another win. :)

Man ... hearing the way the Yankees talked about him was awesome.

Damn, 8 & 1/3 innings is a LOT! He did well last night, kept himself out of some trouble. I think we might keep this guy for a while. For his third start he did really well. **** his last few pitches were still at 94-96mph! BAM!:thumbsup2:

Tejas500 04-25-2012 07:29 PM

I liked Robinson Cano's quote the best, Yu is definitely the Swiss Army knife of pitchers. I am glad to have the guy on the roster.
