Default Are there any electric smoker users out there?

Decided to try a smoker. As a lover of good BBQ (IMO, Angelo's in FTW still ranks as the best/most consistent-though I eat it everywhere I travel) I wanted to try my own hand at it. A friend of mine runs the Texas BBQ Forum (http://texasbbqforum.com/), so I've poked around there for some idea's. Saw the "SmokinTex" guy's at the TRA tradeshow in 2010, decided to go with them. (http://www.smokintex.com/) Their product made good BBQ "stupid easy" IMO. It tasted very good, and being 100% electric, no having to tend a fire for hours on end, watch the temperture, etc. Lots of places now use an electric smoker for BBQ as many cities are just not permitting big wood-fire smokers in their city limits. Cousin's @ Alliance has to get their meat from the McCart location for example. Same for their DFW Airport locations! Kenny's new BBQ joint @ the Shops @ Legacy also uses an electric smoker at that location, and hs BBQ was recently rated very highly by Texas Monthly. My daughter went to the CIA & they used electric smokers there (after all, it is New York!), so they seem to be fairly popular.

So, to the point, any other "electric smoker" users here or will I be shunned? Any other SmokinTex users? Any thoughts? Idea's? I have just fired off the third round of 'break-in' wood to season the interior.

I considered a Treager, but they use pellets. I am told electric smokers won't give you the 'pink ring' around the meat that a wood smoker does, but saw one work-around was to toss a couple of charcoal briquets in the box that holds the wood, and presto...pink ring. I will try that tomorrow. Any expereinced users out there? Lemme know...

Thanks-

I've got a traeger. Works as advertised. Have given them to my father, fil and sister in law as gifts since they love them too.

W have a double door Cajun Injector asnd it works very well. Love the thermostatic control and the need to only add chips every few hours.

TomBoy, will have to try the briquettes trick.

Flavor and simplicity can't be beat with the electric.

My parents love their Traeger electric pellet smoker.

My buddies love their big green eggs (they all have the electric fan attachment at the bottom that automatically maintains a set temperature).

I have the Cookshack SM025 and I love it. One thing I have found, however, is to add more wood after smoking for a couple of hours as we tend to like a little more flavor than the manual suggests.

I second the Cookshack! I have an SM45 that i carried here from south carolina. I used to get made of out there for using electric, until they ate the bbq or ribs....changed their minds real quick.

BGE with the Stoker fan attachment is my weapon of choice. +/- 3 degrees temperature control and 20+ hours of smoking w/o a refill. Monitoring status from your iPhone is a nice bonus.
