Default CHL

Looking for a recommendation regarding CHL classes. My son turns 21 next week and we would like to take the class together. We are both familiar with handguns and really just need the class and to qualify.

I took mine at DFW Gun Range, I would imagine most CHL classes are about the same. A day of class, a pretty simple range test, written test and you're done.

I took the class from Linda and Marty at Crossfire. Classes were held at Cabela's in Ft Worth.

This was Silentrun's recommendation a few years ago. The class was outstanding and great that it was taught by people with active law enforcement background. Phil knows his stuff. The class was in McKinney.

I did mine at DFW Gun Range also. Some of the other classes aren't as thorough with the paperwork, fingerprinting, etc and leave it up to you to do. The DFW Gun Range class steps you thru it all and makes sure it's smooth. Highly recommended.

Agreed. The picture taking/fingerprinting/paperwork portion is the most complicated part of the CHL process (sadly). Finding someone/some place that handles all of the administration stuff is a nice bonus.

I never done the Frisco Gun Range class but the facilities are really nice. The classes are joke wherever you take them... the people I've seen "qualify" to carry, literally scares me more than the thought of being car-jacked.

One of the guys in my class rented a 9mm for the shooting test and loaded the rounds backwards in the clip and then complained when it didn't fire. He still passed.

I'm a big proponent for 2nd amendment rights. Everyone should own a gun if they want one. Carrying one in public, not so much. I wish the CHL test was a multi-day deal and cost twice as much. It scares me who may be legally carrying in public these days.

When it first came out in '96 (if I recall right) I took a class that was taught by State Representative Ray Allen (one of the co-authors of the original CHL bill) and Dallas Constable Roma Skinner. It was a LONG, all-day affair (8 am - 6 pm). It was *very* thorough. It was awesome having the legislative insight from Rep Allen as well. The classes have since been shortened, for better or worse. My experience shows that those that really care keep up with the legislative changes - this is the "go to" forum for TX CHL: http://www.texaschlforum.com

BTW - no CHL needed to carry in your vehicle, as long as you are a law-abiding citizen (TX Motorist Protection Act).
