When I get home tonight it will be Glenfiddich, Laphroaig or Glenlivet, it's gobna take a special occasion to crack open the Portwood.

So what bottle should I pick up next? Maybe some Macallan? Glenmorangie? Something "affordable", suggestions appreciated.

you seem more of a highland guy, so I can't suggest much to you. I tend to steer clear of the glens and most all of the highland stuff. Balvenie is as close as I'll get to highland. I'm pretty sure Mark shares my taste for Auchentoshan and I like all of the Jura bottles that I've had. Their 10 yr is some of the best 40 dollars you can spend. The Auchentoshan is a lowland, so not as peaty as the Islays (which I most prefer) and not as fruity as the highlands. Not a scotch but I've been enjoying a bottle of Balcones Rumble, which is bottled up not too far from you all - over in Waco. "A Texas wildflower honey, turbinado sugar, and Mission fig spirit". It's really good, different stuff.

I don't usually have the cash to drop more than a bill on a bottle of whiskey, but I have plenty of fun on my budget, and it takes me a long time to go through a bottle of scotch anyway. Introduce yourself to the wonderful (rapidly growing) world of micro-distillery bourbon.. that's a great time.

Right now Centennial is having a great sale...got some Highland Park 18 for $71. Just finished a bottle of Glenmorangie ER 18 year...good stuff. Cheaper, but a fav is Glenlivet 15 year French Oak.

I checked out the Centennial sale, by the time I got there everything was really picked over clean.

I do prefer the Highland stuff, although I have a couple of Islay bottles for when I'm in the mood (Laphroaig is a nice change of pace).

Will, I don't like single malt Scotch on the rocks, just drink it neat or maybe with 2-3 drops of water.

+1 scotch on the rocks is pointless (to me)

If you need ice in it, you're trying to drink it too fast.

I actually do like a cube or two...and remember visiting Glenfiddich in Scotland many years ago. I asked for a cube and the young, cute...female server called me a *****.

You're gonna put ice in 18-year old single malt scotch? Might as well just pee in the bottle.

I recently had some blended Hibiki 12, and it was surprisingly pretty impressive. Great stuff. Unlike many blended whiskeys which put crap filler whiskey in, there's over 30 different single malts in this, the worst/youngest being their 12yr, and it also includes their 30yr single malt. Highly recommended, and it's not super expensive either at about 50 or 60 a bottle.
