Default turbo miatas reliable on track?

I know ken mentioned he had owned several FI miata track cars in the past. Some of you other guys might have as well. Do the stock internals stand up to mild boost well on the track? ive read a few places that turbo miata track cars aren't know for reliability. I'm curious if any of you have hands on experience with reliability of a turbo miata track car.

Ken, I'd love to hear your opinion, you drive way harder than i am capable of so if it lived for you on stock internals, I should be golden.

Might want to check with Keith Verges too ... he's owned some, and might still have one for sale.

Keith's turbo Miata's are fully sorted too and very durable and cheap on parts. I wish I would have bought one from him a while back. I even went with him to his garage to check them out. I just couldn't make sense of it as I don't go out to MSR enough and I don't have a good place to store it. Plus, the Vette sits too much as it is and I'd rather drive it with the few track days I do have.

Bang for the buck, a Verges' turbo Miata would be awesome though.

I agree 100% on Keith's cars.

The turbo Miata seem to need more cooling over the SC ones. If you keep the boost at about 10 PSI heat is more manageable and stock internals will last. Build the motor out and push 22 PSI and hit 400HP at the wheel.

On my '93 turbo I had to fabricate a sheet of aluminum to funnel all air coming in the nose through the aluminum racing radiator. This finally fix overheating.

On my '99 SC I ran 12 PSI and had no heating issues. Gray at Track Dog built the car.
It seemed quick.

Keith is your turbo Miata guru.
Gary at track dog racing is the local Miata supercharger expert. I know lots of guys ( me included) who run his setup on the track with minimal or no issues.

My brother in law has a turbo Miata that has all the kinks worked out of it. He runs it in NASA and TT without issues. He can also show/tell you what to do and what not to do.
Ken knows him as well.

I've been thinking about the Miata route to cut down on the cost of consumables, and be able to track more. It's gotta be a street car too though.. not a DD, but street legal. No other way to justify it.

That's what I do. Set it up for the track, drive it to the track, beat the hell out of it at the track, drive home. Wash, rinse, repeat.

that's so wrong. lol

i had so many people say hi at the track i cant sort them all out, we're a friendly lot around here. i already thought tracemission was some sort of lotus driving mustang stalker.

that said, if he is the dude im thinking he had to be what 6'5" or so. i found when researching the miata for racing that people 6'5" or so can drive spec cars with the right cage and if the seat is mounted directly to the floor rather than rails.

Or just drop an LS1, 3, ... in a Miata and be done.

i've often wondered how those bigger engines would affect the handling of the car.

or better, turbo LS6. Clint at True Street was showing me this a week or so ago. I think it was supposed to run at the Texas Invitational last weekend. Maybe someone who made it can chime in on whether it showed up.

Yeah, that was me, and I'm not available, but I appreciate the sentiment.

I'm 6'9". One of my co-driver's/owners in LeMons is about 6'5", and he recently got into Spec Miata Racing. Even with his modifed tranny tunnel I couldn't fit. The only Miata I've ever been able to fit in was owned by Pat Cox, who owns (owned?) Tax Masters and Tax Master Racing in Houston ... he's like 6'4", 300+. He had the floor pans cut out, lowered, and then welded back in, which is some decent $$$ in fab work.
